Chapter 1: Building a positive attitude

In this chapter author shares a story of a man who sells different colored balloons at a fair; whenever his business used to go down, to tackle that situation, he used to fly one balloon in the air so that when children see that balloon in the air, they feel like buying it. With this technique, his sales again used to go up. One day, a boy came near him when he was selling his balloon. He asked, “IF YOU RELEASE A BLACK BALLOON, WOULD THAT ALSO FLY.” That boy’s concern moved that balloon seller, and for this, that man replied With empathy, ”SON, IT IS NOT THE COLOR OF THE BALLOON; IT IS WHAT IS INSIDE THAT MAKES IT GO UP.”

With this story author want us to know that this man saying applies to our lives as well. It is what is inside that counts. The author says that the thing inside us that makes us go up is our attitude.

Moral - Through positive thinking and hard work nothing is impossible and we can achieve anything in life.A positive attitude towards life can help one to conquer all the barriers on the way to success.

५.सारांश..... मराठी के प्रतिष्ठित उपन्यासकार शिवाजी सावंत का ‘मृत्युंजय’ इसी कर्ण को केन्द्र में रखकर लिखा गया चरित्र-प्रधान उपन्यास है। शिवाजी सावंत का यह उपन्यास उनका पहला उपन्यास था जिसे उन्होंने 27 वर्ष की अवस्था में ही लिखा था। मराठी में इसका प्रकाशन 1967 ई० में हुआ था। इसका हिन्दी अनुवाद सबसे पहले 1974 में प्रकाशित हुआ और इसके हिन्दी अनुवाद के ही 43 संस्करण छप चुके हैं। इसे कई पुरस्कार मिल चुके हैं और कई देशी-विदेशी भाषा में इसका अनुवाद हो चुका है। इसके अलावा उनके दो उपन्यास ‘छावा’ और ‘युगंधर’ हैं जो क्रमशः शिवाजी और कृष्ण के चरित्रों को केन्द्र में रखकर लिखे गए हैं। मृत्युंजय का अनुवाद हिन्दी के अलावा कई देशी-विदेशी भाषाओं में हो चुका है।
इस उपन्यास की भूमिका में शिवाजी सावंत ने बताया है कि कर्ण के चरित्र से वे बचपन से ही, जब वे आठवीं या नवीं के छात्र थे, एक मराठी नाटिका ‘अंगराज कर्ण’ में अभिनय करते वक्त परिचित हुए थे। उसके बाद बी० ए० प्रथम वर्ष में राष्ट्रभाषा हिन्दी के पर्चे में हिन्दी के कवि केदारनाथ मिश्र ‘प्रभात’ के खंडकाव्य ‘कर्ण’ से वे काफी प्रभावित हुए और मराठी में वैसा खंडकाव्य लिखने की इच्छा जगी। उसकी तैयारी के दौरान कर्ण के चरित्र की महाकाव्यात्मक संभावनाएँ देखते हुए उन्होंने समझा कि इस पर तो उपन्यास लिखा जाना चाहिए और वे उपन्यास के लिए महाभारत के विस्तृत अध्ययन की ओर प्रवृत्त हुए। महाभारत के अध्ययन के बाद उन्होंने कर्ण के जीवन से संबंधित हिन्दी, अंग्रेज़ी और मराठी के नाटक, काव्य, उपन्यास, शोध तथा भाष्यों का अध्ययन किया जिसमें मराठी के नाटककार श्री शि० म० परांजपे के नाटक ‘पहला पाण्डव’ का उन्होंने विशेष रूप से जिक्र किया है। उसके बाद उन्होंने महाभारत से संबंधित स्थलों की यात्रा की।
इस उपन्यास की रचना-शैली में उन्होंने पात्रों की वक्तव्य-शैली का सहारा लिया है। उपन्यास या कहानी की रचना-शैली का यह महत्वपूर्ण बिन्दु होता है कि कथा किसके दृष्टिकोण से कही जा रही है। इस दृष्टिकोण को “वैन्टेज़-प्वाइंट” कहते हैं। अधिकतर उपन्यासों में उपन्यासकार अदृश्य रूप से कथा सुनाता है एक ऐसे व्यक्ति के रूप में जो सर्वज्ञाता और अन्तर्यामी है अर्थात् वह सभी पात्रों के मन में उठनेवाले विचारों को भी जानता है।
६.शिक्षा .....कई बार सत्य परेशान भी होता है और पराजित भी..
७.व्यक्तिगत टिप्पणी ...मृत्युंजय में लेखक ने महाभारत के इसी इतिहास को अंगराज कर्ण के दृष्टिकोण से सुनाया है। कुछ घटनाओं पर प्रकाश डालने के उद्देश्य से दुर्योधन, कुंती, वैशाली व भगवान् श्री कृष्ण के व्यक्तित्वों पर भी बल दिया गया है। उपन्यास के आरंभ में कर्ण अपनी मृत्यु के पश्चात् पाठकों को संबोधित करते देखे जाते हैं।
